Driving to the Gold Coast Theme Parks: Routes, Parking & Family Car Hire Tips

Most of the big Gold Coast theme parks sit along one easy stretch of the Pacific Motorway (M1). Dreamworld and WhiteWater World are at Coomera, off Exit 54. Warner Bros. Movie World and Wet'n'Wild are side by side at Oxenford, signposted from Exit 60 (Helensvale Road), with Paradise Country right next door. Sea World is closer to the coast on The Spit at Main Beach, reached via Exit 66 (Smith Street) and then Seaworld Drive.

From Brisbane Airport, Dreamworld is roughly 45 minutes and about 63 km away by car, and from Gold Coast Airport, Movie World is roughly 30 to 35 minutes and about 43 km away, based on Google Maps estimates at the time of writing. On-site parking is available at all four parks, and it's free at Dreamworld according to the park's own website. For families visiting more than one park, a car with room for a pram, a cooler bag and properly fitted child seats makes the whole trip a lot easier than juggling buses and transfers.

You walk up to the counter at RaD Car Hire Gold Coast Airport with the kids in tow, one of them already wearing a superhero cape, and before you've even handed over your licence, our team have spotted it.

"Movie World, is it?" they say, grinning. "Good choice. And let me guess, you're trying to squeeze in Dreamworld and Sea World as well?"

That's usually the plan, and it's a great one. The Gold Coast has one of the best clusters of theme parks anywhere in the country, and most of them are only a few minutes apart along the M1. The team get asked about them more than almost anything else, and they're proud of it. "People fly in from all over the world for these parks," say the team. "We get to live ten minutes up the road from them. You don't get tired of seeing people this excited."

It's the same story up at RaD Car Hire Brisbane Airport, where David sees plenty of families landing in Brisbane with a theme park week already planned. "Half our Gold Coast bookings from Brisbane are theme park trips," he says. "And it's not just families. We get groups of adults who are theme park fans, couples doing a coaster weekend, all sorts. Everyone's in a good mood when they're heading to Movie World."

This guide is the conversation you'd have with them at the counter: which exit to take, where to park, what time to arrive, which vehicle actually fits a pram and a cooler bag, and where the team would send you for a good feed afterwards.

Why a rental car makes sense for a theme park holiday

There are other ways to reach the parks. Public transport in South East Queensland currently costs a flat 50 cents per trip on Translink services, and private shuttle companies such as Con-X-ion run theme park transfers from the main Gold Coast accommodation areas. For a solo traveller doing a single park, either of those can work well.

For families, and for anyone doing two or three parks across a few days, the maths and the logistics tend to change:

  • Time. When we checked Google Maps, the drive from Gold Coast Airport to Movie World came up at around 31 minutes. The same trip by public transport came up at 1 hour 48 minutes, using three different services. Movie World's own website notes that the TX7 park bus from Helensvale station runs every 15 minutes between 9:00am and 11:30am, so your arrival window is set by the timetable, not by you.
  • Per-person costs. Shuttle transfers are generally priced per person, per trip, so the total climbs quickly for a family of four or five across several park days. A rental car costs the same whether there are two of you or seven. We'd recommend getting a transfer quote for your group and comparing it with a car hire quote for the same days before you decide.
  • The gear. Prams, car seats, cooler bags, wet swimmers after Wet'n'Wild, a change of clothes for the littlest one: it all goes in the boot, and it's all still there when you get back to the car.
  • Your own schedule. Leave when the kids are tired, not when the last shuttle leaves. Switch parks on a rainy day. Stop for dinner on the way home.

"The biggest thing is the flexibility," says Hardy at our Golf Coast branch. "If it's raining in the morning, you can switch Sea World for Wet'n'Wild tomorrow, or go and have lunch somewhere and head in later. You can't do that when you're locked into a shuttle booking."

Staff tip from Hardy: "Book your car and your child seats together, at the same time as your park tickets. School holidays are when everyone wants a people mover, and they're the first vehicles to go."

Highway Navigation: The M1 Theme Park Corridor

The good news for first-time visitors is that navigation is simple. The Pacific Motorway (M1) runs north to south between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and the theme park exits come one after another, so you'll rarely spend more than a few minutes off the motorway.

Driving from Brisbane

From Brisbane Airport or the CBD, head south on the M1 towards the Gold Coast. Google Maps puts the fastest route from Brisbane Airport to Dreamworld at around 44 minutes and 62.8 km in normal traffic, though that route does include tolls. Coming from the north, Dreamworld is the first park you reach, so it makes a natural first day for Brisbane-based visitors.

"If you're staying in Brisbane and doing day trips, give yourself plenty of buffer for the morning traffic heading out of the city," says David at RaD Car Hire Brisbane Airport. "Leaving by around 8am usually gets you to Coomera in time for opening, but check the traffic before you go. The M1 can be unpredictable during school holidays."

Driving from Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach or Gold Coast Airport

If you're staying on the coast, you'll be heading north. From Surfers Paradise, Dreamworld's own guide puts the drive at around 25 minutes via Smith Street and the M1. From Gold Coast Airport, where our branch is based, Google Maps estimated around 31 minutes to Movie World when we checked. Sea World is the exception. It's the closest park to Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach, and you won't need the motorway at all if you're already on the coast.

Exit details are from Dreamworld, Sea World and the Pacific Motorway exit list. Always follow the live signage and your navigation app, since roadworks on the M1 can occasionally change lane layouts.

Movie World and Dreamworld are close together. Google Maps puts the drive between them at around 11 minutes and 7.8 km, which is why so many visitors do them on back-to-back days from the same accommodation. Movie World to Sea World is around 27 minutes and 19 km.

Staff tip from David: "Put the park into your navigation app before you leave the branch, not while you're on the M1. Exits 54, 57 and 60 come up quickly one after another, and it's easy to shoot past the one you want if you're still fiddling with the phone."

Park-by-Park Parking & Driving Guide

Warner Bros. Movie World & Wet'n'Wild (Oxenford)

Movie World and Wet'n'Wild sit side by side on Entertainment Road, Oxenford, so the drive and the parking approach are the same for both.

Parking. Movie World's official site doesn't list parking prices, but travel guides such as Gold Coast Info describe free on-site parking, with premium options also available, and visitor answers on Tripadvisor overwhelmingly say the same. We'd recommend checking the latest details with the park before you go, since parking arrangements and any premium parking prices can change.

Arrival time. For 22 September to 11 October 2026, Movie World lists gates and attractions as open from 10:00am to 5:00pm. Aim to be parked by around 9:15am. That gives you time to unload the pram, sort out sunscreen and hats and be near the gates before they open. As one Reddit user in r/queensland put it, you'll be queuing everywhere except for the first ride if you're there when it opens. Hours change with the season and school holidays, so check the current times on the day.

Pram access. If you'd rather not bring your own, Movie World hires out standard strollers for $20 per day, suitable for children from 6 months old, up to 15 kg and under 100 cm. There are also tap-and-pay lockers from $15 to $25 inside the park. With your own car, though, you can bring the pram your little one is used to.

Eskies and food. Movie World's FAQs say eskies and coolers are permitted but may be inspected on entry, and there are rules about what food you can bring in, so read those before you pack. Our suggestion is to take a small cooler bag into the park and leave the big esky in the boot with cold drinks for the drive home.

Wet'n'Wild. The same early-arrival rule applies next door. One Reddit user suggested that if you're there 20 minutes before it opens, you can fit in three or four rides before it gets busy. Pack a towel, dry clothes and a plastic bag for wet swimmers so the car seats stay dry on the way home. Wet'n'Wild lists the same 10:00am to 5:00pm hours for late September into October 2026.

Staff tip from Hardy: "Take a photo of your parking row. Every parent thinks they'll remember where they parked, and at 5pm, with tired kids and sore feet, nobody does."

Dreamworld & WhiteWater World (Coomera)

Dreamworld and WhiteWater World share the same site on Dreamworld Parkway, Coomera, straight off Exit 54.

Parking. Dreamworld's website describes free, convenient parking. We couldn't find any official details of a paid VIP or premium parking option at the time of writing, so if closer parking matters to you, it's worth asking the park directly.

Opening hours. Dreamworld and WhiteWater World were both listed as open 10:00am to 5:00pm when we checked. WhiteWater World shares the same site, which is handy for families: as one parent in r/queensland pointed out, the water park is part of the theme park, so everyone can find something they like.

EV charging. We weren't able to confirm any on-site EV charging at Dreamworld from the park's official information, so please don't rely on charging in the park car park. Google Maps does list several public fast chargers within a short drive of Dreamworld, including Evie and bp pulse sites, but availability and working status change, so check an app such as PlugShare or the network's own app before you set off.

Getting out at closing time. Everyone leaves at once at 5pm. If the kids can manage it, grab an early dinner at Westfield Coomera (just off the same exit) and let the car park and the M1 on-ramp clear before you head home.

Staff tip from David: "Dreamworld is the first park you hit coming down from Brisbane, so it's the easiest day for anyone staying up our way. You're off the motorway at Exit 54 and in the car park a couple of minutes later."

Sea World (Main Beach)

Sea World is the only one of the big parks that isn't along the M1 corridor. It sits on The Spit at Main Beach, reached by Seaworld Drive.

Parking. Sea World's official site confirms that on-site parking is available for guests, and Gold Coast Info describes it as free. Check the latest arrangements before your visit.

Traffic. Seaworld Drive is the main road on and off The Spit, and it's shared with the marinas, Marina Mirage, the Sea World Resort and beachgoers heading to the northern end. On sunny weekends and school holidays, that means traffic can build up, especially around the middle of the day when people are coming for the afternoon while others are arriving for lunch at the marinas. Arriving before opening, or coming later in the afternoon, usually makes for an easier drive in and out.

Opening hours. Sea World lists 10:00am to 5:00pm for 22 September to 11 October 2026. It's also the one park you can reach easily without a car if you're staying in Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach, since the park notes that bus route 705 runs there roughly every 20 minutes.

Staff tip from Hardy: "Sea World is the park where I tell people to arrive early. The drive onto The Spit is lovely, but you don't want to be sitting in a queue of cars on Seaworld Drive at 11am with a toddler who's been told they're about to see the dolphins."

Which Park Should You Choose? Advice from Locals (and Reddit)

This is the question Hardy and David get asked most, and the answer depends on who's in the car. Here's what locals and recent visitors have been saying on Reddit. These threads are one to three years old, so ride line-ups and park conditions will have changed since they were written. Use them as a flavour of what people think, and check each park's website for the latest.

A few practical tips came up again and again:

  1. Check height requirements before you book. One of r/GoldCoast's top commenters recommended checking height requirements on the park websites first, so nobody ends up disappointed at the gate.
  2. Consider paying for queue-skipping. One commenter pointed out that paying extra for priority access could save a lot of wasted time on busy days.
  3. Go on a weekday. A visitor from Melbourne found that weekdays are a lot less dense than weekends.
  4. Don't write off a rainy day. Locals who live near the parks said rainy days are the best days to go, with one reporting practically no lines at Wet'n'Wild on a showery day. Bear in mind that some rides may close in bad weather.

"The rainy day tip is a good one, and it's exactly why having your own car helps," says Hardy. "Locals keep an eye on the weather and pop in when the crowds stay home. With a car, you can do the same."

Staff tip from David: "Don't try to cram every park into one trip if you've only got a few days. Pick two you'll really enjoy, do them properly from opening to closing, and keep a day spare for the beach. The kids will remember that as much as the rides."

Choosing the Right Family Vehicle with RaD Car Hire

People movers and 7-seater SUVs

For families of five or more, or smaller families with a lot of gear, a people mover is usually the right choice. One thing that surprises people: with all eight seats in a Carnival-class van occupied, boot space is around 627 litres, which is more than you might expect from a vehicle that size. For a family of four or five, folding part of the third row gives you far more room for a pram and cooler bag. If there are only a few of you and you're travelling light, a mid-size SUV can work well too. Pre-booking child seats and booster seats

Something different: Exit 57 at Oxenford is also the turn-off for Tamborine Mountain via the Tamborine-Oxenford Road.
